Black Women Who Paint Mural

‘The Backbone’ is a deeply personal piece exploring the beauty, spectrum, resilience, and history of Black identity. The centrepiece…the Afro and the backbone…speaks to the symbolism of hair within the Black community. Our hair is identity, communication, resistance, resilience, and unity. It carries our past while continuing to shape our future.

The braided backbone can be seen as hair extending into the earth, but also as the foundation that holds us up. The hands within the work represent the complexities of our history, the hands that have oppressed us, but also the hands of our own people that have held us, lifted us, and carried us forward.

For me, this piece is a testament to where I’ve been, where I’m going, and the stories that continue to live within us.

My work at Union Station in 2024!

I have had the honour of being a part of MakeRoom and Union’s stations’ collaboration for their exhibit called Black Dreams and Aspirations sponsored by TD. In total 12 artists have been chosen for this installation divided into groups of 6. We were asked to make pieces highlighting what it means to dream while black. The collection was available for viewing during Black History Month until mid-May 2024.

The first installment which stars me alongside 5 other artists, Yaw Tony, Yomi Orimoloye, Sarah Waithe, Kahame Msiska, and Segun Caezar.
